Tehran Before the Storm
Abdullah Jan's eyewitness account of the Iran he reported in 2012 — and the roots of the war that would follow.
Tehran Before the Storm is drawn from the months Abdullah Jan spent reporting in Iran in 2012, when sanctions were tightening, the currency was collapsing, and the country was still years away from the confrontation everyone in the room could already feel coming.
It is a book about ordinary life under pressure — the bazaar traders, the students, the officials speaking carefully — set against three decades of covering conflict, displacement, and the region's fault lines.
Written from contemporaneous notes and interviews and revisited a decade later, it asks what the reporting of that year got right, what it missed, and what the answer tells us about how the region is covered now.
